Searching for Silence

This article was very interesting in framing what art and music can be. First of all, I think “4’33”” is kind of hilarious. I think the thought of “there is no such thing as silence” is an interesting concept, I’m not sure if I agree with it. There is definitely true silence out there, and I think it’s rare and kind of haunting. However, in a room full of people with weather outside, silence is not really silence. There is someone breathing, wind outside, someone rustling around in their chair. So that is a time of meditation almost to pause and just be, hear what is naturally occurring that we wouldn’t usually pay attention to. This piece, “4’33””, refocuses what’s happening back to the audience a little bit. I do think it is hilarious though that someone made history in performing a lack of a performance. It’s like presenting a “painting” of a blank canvas and calling it art. Which, it may be. So then I think art can be hilarious. Not everything has to be taken so seriously in my opinion so why not make statements through… “stupid”… mediums and performances. Stupid can be really fun, and that’s why experimenting is such an amazing thing. Not only can it provoke new thoughts but can simply bring some laughter, fun and curiosity to the moment. When we first viewed/listened to “4’33”” in class, I really thought it was kind of dumb that this occurred. Now I don’t think it’s brilliant by any means, but with more thought on the piece now, I think it’s quite fun and more of an art exhibition than a musical performance. Those could also be interchangeable though… Who knows. What is art? What is music? What is good or stupid? Is anything real? What is life? Is there a God???????
