Artist's Statement

When people view my art and design, I want them to feel something. I hope they get excited by it or bothered by it, curious or disgusted, happy or sad. I'd rather that than viewers just feel nothing. Ideally, though, I'd like viewers of my work to see what I’ve made and feel playful, weird, day-dreamy, or human. I’d like them to take it upon themselves to look at something and think “What else could this be?” or “What if this didn’t look like that?”. A lot of my designs and illustrations play with human senses- seeing, tasting, feeling, etc. Usually, they have a twist on them to alter the image of what we’re used to seeing. This is where I like to have fun. I like to produce something within the norm and make it surreal in some way. Whether it’s a variation of the colors we expect to see or placing certain objects next to something else, I like to surprise the viewer in the way that they don’t see this in normal, real life. Maybe I’m giving the viewer a snippet of some dream or encouraging them to think beyond what exists in front of them. I think that’s a really fun concept- encouraging imagination. Perception, sensation, and everything that goes on in our minds plays a big role in my work and I want to intrigue the viewer with that in hopes that they ponder those concepts too.
